Some things we see and thereby know that they exist. But other things we do not see, but infer their existence from observable effects. This distinction seems simple and straightforward, but as soon as it is made, the question of what we see becomes pressing. Some philosophers have thought that we never directly see physical objects but only infer their existence from what we directly see, which they take to be mental particulars sometimes called sense data. This thought has a distinguished history, arguably defended by luminaries such as John Locke. Physical objects, on this view, lie behind the veil of what is perceived.

Lyrics

Was there a veil between us
Covering up what should be clear
Was there a veil between us
Forcing me to infer whether you are near

All my ideas get in the way
When you’re the one I want to see

I know that you’re a woman of qualities
Just not all of the ones that I seem to see
You make feel so hot and then so cold
But this isn’t like you or so I’m told

My ideas come between us
When you’re the one I want to feel

You made an impression in me
But it faded into a copy
That I try to hold in my memory
But it’s not as lively
As I need it to be

So was there a veil between us?
Was there a veil between us?

You made an impression in me
But it faded into a copy
That I try to hold in my memory
But it’s not as lively
As I need it to be

All these impressions in me
They fill the screen
So that they’re what’s seen
And I try to reach you directly
But it cannot be
No transparency

So there was a veil between us
There was a veil between us
